At the 2023 OCA National Convention in Washington DC, members of OCA Las Vegas participated in “Day on the Hill”. A unique experience for AANHPI advocates to talk to state senators on key issues impacting the Asian American and Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander community.
Several OCA Las Vegas members were able to visit several Nevada representative’s offices to discuss incoming bills focused on mental health, AANHPI history, and civil rights protection.
OCA Day on the Hill
This is a unique opportunity for OCA members to represent the Asian American community and their home state to talk to senators and representatives about key issues that not only affect Asian Americans but a wide variety of minorities.
Over 100 OCA members from across the nation visited the congressional offices in Washington DC to meet over 40 different representatives as advocates for mental health, AANHPI education in K-12 curriculum, and civil rights protection.
Experience for OCA Las Vegas members
With a wide range of OCA Las Vegas members ranging from high school to young professionals, it was a first-hand experience for many OCA Las Vegas members to learn how to advocate for specific issues on the federal level and talk to our state representatives.
Prior to visiting our Nevada state representatives, all OCA Las Vegas members had to review incoming bills and how this impacts the Asian American community and apply their personal experience related to mental health, AANHPI education, and civil rights protection.
For many OCA Las Vegas members, it was a unique experience being able to visit the congressional offices and being able to interact with the state representatives and learning more about the work they’re involved with on the federal level. Being involved with “Day on the Hill” allowed OCA Las Vegas to be an advocate for the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.
