How OCA’s Advocacy Leads to Lunar New Year Postal Stamp

In January 2024, the United States Postal Services (USPS) unveiled the Lunar New Year’s postal stamp – the Dragon. This marks the fifth stamp celebrating AANHPI culture nationwide by the USPS.

When Did the USPS Start Creating Lunar New Year Postal Stamps?

Historically, the USPS has never created a Lunar New Year stamp until an OCA member of the Georgia Chapter (Jean Chen) started a campaign in 1986. The goal of getting a Lunar New Year postal stamp was to celebrate the culture and history of AAPI communities living in the United States.

With full support by OCA National, the National President advocated and worked with USPS to eventually introduce the very first Lunar New Year Stamp featuring the Rooster at the OCA National Convention in 1992.

Importance of the Lunar New Year Stamp

The Lunar New Year stamp is a monumental showing of the various possibilities to bring equal representation and celebration of AAPI identity and culture at the national level.

As part of OCA’s ongoing efforts to fight for representation in every aspect of American history as well as uplifting the AAPI communities, this is a start of advancing equal representation and recognition of the AAPI community.
