The AAPI community has been one of the fastest growing voter groups in the United States. This is especially true in the state of Nevada. As a result, the voting power of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders has increased and political candidates have taken notice.
The growing strength of the AAPI voter community in Nevada has led to renewed instances of reaching out from political candidates across the political spectrum.
Democrats and Republicans make efforts to reach AAPI communities
AAPIs make up around 10% of the electorate in Nevada and this number has been consistently growing every year. Hence, the AAPI community has been an increasingly important voting group for those who are seeking office.
They are so important that some prominent politicians, such as Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, have been scheduling events at Asian-owned Las Vegas businesses like Urban Matcha. This particular event was a meeting with the Asian American Pacific Islander Chamber of Southern Nevada to highlight the struggles of AAPI businesses with the rise of xenophobia and hate crimes.
Very prominently, Filipino Americans make up a large chunk of the AAPI community in Nevada. As such, both presidential candidates have attempted to build their support within the Filipino American community. For example, Kamala Harris recently began a “Pinoy Pride” campaign to connect with Filipino voters. Meanwhile, the “Filipinos for Trump in Nevada” group meets every month and the Trump campaign makes appearances at local AAPI community events.
Why is this important?
In the face of rising hate crimes against the AAPI community, it is important to remember the power of the vote. It is also important to be able to raise your voice to bring attention to these issues.
