Overview

Proudly sponsored by MGM Resorts International, the OCA Las Vegas AAPI Excellence Scholarship will award four (4) outstanding community advocacy leaders (two high school students and two college students) with $500 each.

Recipients will be recognized on OCA Las Vegas’ website and social channels, as well as through a dedicated eblast.

Eligibility

  • Must identify as Asian American, Pacific Islander, or Native Hawaiian
  • Must currently be enrolled as a Southern Nevada high school senior OR as an undergraduate student in a Southern Nevada college/university (proof of transcript required)
  • Minimum cumulative unweighted GPA requirement:
    • If you are completing high school, you must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher
    • If you are a college student, you must have a 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Must plan to be enrolled in courses full-time for the semester following the award period
  • Applicants must not be a child or dependent of:
    • an OCA National staff member
    • an OCA Executive Council member
    • an OCA Business Advisory Council member
  • If selected, a check for the award amount will be mailed directly to you, and it will be considered taxable income, meaning you/your family will need to include it in the next tax filing season.

Question 1: AAPI Focus

In max 1,000 words, please write about an issue affecting the Las Vegas AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) community that you are passionate about addressing. Be sure to include the following aspects:

  • Provide background and historical context that may be helpful for the scholarship committee to know about this topic. If there are facts and statistics, please include them with appropriate sources.
  • Explain why you are passionate about this topic, and how it resonates with you. Feel free to add examples you’ve seen or experienced (if comfortable).
  • While many issues can’t be solved overnight, tell us about some ways this issue can be properly addressed or improved.
  • Be sure to tie in your commitment to the AAPI community and how you feel you can personally make an impact and/or help improve this issue in the future.
